I’m kinda tempted to also put it in my ‘brain’ list below. You can try and shop for “Robotech” instead, but if you do, steer clear of “Mospeada”. Almost anything with the “Macross” name on it. I don’t like sports manga, but I though I’d mention it as it’s rather popular. When Bakkuman gets its animé, I’ll definitely watch. The old Heidi and 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother Many Shonen have abnormal-hair, gotta-be-number-one, one-track-minded heroes I’m no longer that interested in. Elfen Lied has no appeal whatsoever, and neither does Lodoss.

I can’t stand Evangelion, for instance: the protagonists are all screwed up in the head and it makes the series feel a little mental and depressed. I also don’t get some of the popular series. Also, if you’re going to watch anime, you have to be mindful of its target audience. The market begins to fill with utter, unapologetic crap. The problem with anime, as with everything else that becomes popular, is massification itself. Geez…Īll things considering, I would rather have filler which deviates from the main story and has the characters do something fun and entertaining, than artificially extending episodes with an event that was supposed to be over in 5 minutes. No wonder that show had over 200 episodes or something. I’m not sure but I think the whole thing wasn’t over until 3 or 4 in the afternoon. Needless to say, 6 episodes later they were still powering up and the planet STILL HASN’T EXPLODED!!! Goku or Gohan are about to finish off the main bad guy and the planet they are on is about to explode in 5 minutes. I recall once, they had a Dragonball Z marathon on Cartoon Network. Nowadays there is just such an overwhelming amount of Anime available, it becomes increasingly difficult to pick out the strawberries from the dingleberries.īy the way, shows that are based on manga comics that haven’t finished yet, often have a LOT of filler in order to give the manga a chance to catch up, or get further ahead.Ĭonsidering that, you could say that Naruto is the Dragonball Z of today. It was just different than what we were used to. This of course doesn’t say anything about the quality of the anime itself, just that there was an appetite for a lot of what we would today consider “annoying anime cliche’s”.

The internet with its fansub groups and possibility of purchasing anime from across the globe, along with globally marketable shows such as Dragonball and Pokemon have opened the floodgates.īack in the day, any importer hoping to make a profit selected whatever they felt was the cream of the crop in terms of possible profit. Some classics still stand though of course. Considering that, I think that I and many of you, more fondly remember certain Anime, than you would if you had discovered it today. I was grateful for any anime I could lay my hands on. Not even online shops, since the web was still in its infancy back then. You couldn’t just walk into a store and pick up an anime dvd. When I first got into Anime, it wasn’t mainstream. But it would perhaps be more appropriate with classifiying it similarily to the term “movies” or “films”.

In the west we tend to classify “anime” as a a genre in itself. Heroes that hit every time and bad guys that miss every time don’t interest me much. I like animes that have a realist view on life. (honestly the little kid didn’t seem that annoying… just couldn’t tell if it was a girl or boy lol) Another good one was noein. I really enjoyed last exile, and now and then, here and there was truly truly stunning (although repulsive in every way) I’m going to watch death note. But in between are alot of us newbies doing our best spamming the universe with out feeble attempts at art.

But really, isn’t that the same with any medium? Think of all the junk movies in between truly outstanding ones… Out of the thousands (millions?) of paintings painted every day how many are true masterpieces?Įvery now and then a brilliant artist directs a film, writes a comic, or a manga, or a painting, or anime, or uses blender to create something truly stunning.
